Osteoarthritis, a type of arthritis, mainly affects the joint tissues. It commonly develops as people get older and often occurs in weight-bearing joints like knees, hands, and feet. As per Ayurveda, the aggravation of Vata in the bones causes them to dry which leads to bone weakness and pain.
The Vata Dosha is responsible for Cervical Spondylitis. In this condition, the joints, discs, and bones of the neck are affected. Also known as arthritis in the neck, this condition causes stiffness in the neck movements making it less flexible.
In most cases, Vata Dosha is responsible for the degeneration and pain in the joints. The same also applies to Lumbar Spondylitis. In this condition, the lower joints of the spine are affected. When the cartilage of the lower joints in the spine wears away, it leads to chronic pain and soreness. This makes regular movements difficult and might also cause a burning sensation.
As per Ayurveda, joint and knee pain is caused due to Vata imbalance in the body. Though knee pain is a common problem faced by people, it can aggravate and interfere with regular bodily movements. The Ama and Vata aggression in the body leads to knee and joint pain. The Panchakarma Ayurveda treatment can help treat this condition effectively.
Rheumatoid Arthritis better known as Amavata in Ayurveda causes joint inflammation and pain. This condition occurs when there is pitta imbalance in the body accompanied by vata imbalance. This condition affects the lining of the joints that causes painful swelling and can limit normal bodily movements.
Ayurveda works on balancing the three energy forces or doshas in the body namely vata, pitta, and kapha. In the school of Ayurveda, various treatment methods and techniques are used to balance these doshas depending on the ailment. One such Ayurvedic treatment is Panchakarma. Panchakarma is known to have benefitted several individuals suffering from Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The Panchakarma treatment has five actions that help with the cleansing and rejuvenation of the body. The Panchakarma treatment method is highly beneficial for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis because it focuses on opening the blocked channels in the body and cleansing the cells. The Panchakarma treatment involves five methods namely, Vaman, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Rakta Moksha.
The Panchakarma treatment is carried out only after understanding the dosha imbalance of the patient. The effectiveness of this treatment also depends heavily on the diet and lifestyle of the individual.
The benefits of opting for Panchakarma treatment include-
The most effective Ayurveda treatment methods for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are as follows-
Virechana is a part of the Panchakarma treatment that has proven to be highly effective for Osteoarthritis and Amavata. In this treatment method, the pitta-dominated areas in the body such as the intestines, gall bladder, and liver are targeted for cleansing. The process is meant for the elimination of harmful metabolic wastes from these areas. Virechana is a three-step procedure that helps in flushing out toxins from the body.
As we all know, vata vitiation causes dryness and leads the bones to degenerate. This Ayurveda treatment involves the use of medicated oils that help in balancing the vata in the body. The massage technique helps in blood circulation and also enhances the functionality of the lymphatic system. The massage strokes and oils work together to detoxify the body.
Upanaha is an Ayurvedic treatment that involves the use of herbal mixtures. Medical pastes are applied on the affected part and covered with leaves that help in the reduction of inflammation and swelling.
The Swedana procedure aims at improving joint flexibility and increasing mobility. This process helps in the detoxification of the body and tries to rebalance the doshas. Swedana makes use of the sweat glands in the body to conduct the procedure. The different methods used in this technique are sweda, patrapottali sweda, and jambira panda sweda.
Vashti is considered to be the most effective Ayurvedic treatment for vata-related diseases. The treatment focuses on flushing out the loosened doshas from the body through the intestinal tract. It involves the usage of herbal decoctions to cure the condition.
Jalookavacharanam works towards tissue repair and has been effective in treating Osteoarthritis and Amavata. The process involves a leech application that helps with blood flow and tissue repair.
For Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, various herbs are used to reduce the inflammation and pain in the affected joints. This supports the Panchakarma treatment therapy and eases the overall process.
Shatavari helps in the lubrication of the tissues. This herb gives a cooling sensation to the affected joints which helps in reducing the pain. The cooling sensation also subsides the inflammation and helps in improving mobility.
Turmeric comes with amazing healing properties. It helps in reducing the inflammation of the joints which reduces pain.
This Ayurvedic herb helps in reducing pain and inflammation caused due to the disease. It has also shown effects in reducing stiffness in the joints.
In Osteoarthritis, the joints suffer from extreme immobility. Guggulu helps with improving joint movement. The herb is also used to reduce inflammation.
Make sure to consult an experienced Ayurveda expert before consuming any of the herbs for treating these conditions.
