Decoding the Problem of Constipation
Though constipation is a minor digestive issue, it affects millions of people worldwide and causes major discomfort. Constipation in general terms includes everything from infrequent bowel movements and difficulty in passing stools to heaviness in the stomach. This condition can disrupt one’s normal routine and may indicate underlying health concerns too. In order to cure constipation, it is important to detect its root cause. In most cases, constipation occurs because of an imbalance of doshas in the body. In Ayurveda, constipation is referred to as ‘Vibandh’ and is caused due to the imbalance of Vata. The Vata dosha in the body is responsible for the movement and flow in the body. When Vata is aggravated, it can lead to dryness and hardness of stool, resulting in constipation.
Contributing Factors of Constipation
Before we get to the ayurvedic treatment of constipation, it is important to know about the factors that lead to constipation.
- Diet
If your diet consists of low fibre, excessive processed foods, and inadequate water intake, then it may lead to the problem of constipation.
- Lifestyle
Those leading a sedentary lifestyle with a lack of physical activity and poor eating habits are at a greater risk of having constipation.
- Mental health
Stress, anxiety, and depression can have serious effects on the functioning of the digestive system. This can also be the reason for your recurring constipation problem.

Panchakarma Treatment for Constipation
Panchakarma therapies are designed to balance and regulate the doshas in the body (Kapha, Pitta, Vata). Panchakarma treatment is a set of five therapies that aim at addressing the root cause of the issue. These therapies help in removing the toxins from the body, improving digestion, and improving blood circulation. The line of treatment depends on the patient’s overall health, underlying conditions, and root cause of the issue.
- Virechana (Purgation therapy)
In Virechana, herbal laxatives are administered to induce controlled purgation. This helps cleanse the intestines and remove accumulated toxins. This therapy is highly effective for constipation.
- Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage)
In this panchakarma therapy, therapeutic oils are used to massage the full body. This helps balance the Vata dosha and stimulates circulation. The massage relaxes the muscles in the body, which helps ease the digestion process.
- Shirodhara
Those suffering from constipation due to stress and anxiety are often recommended Shirodhara. In this therapy, there is continuous pouring of warm herbal oils on the forehead, which calms the nervous system and reduces stress.
Shama Chikitsa
Along with the above-mentioned panchakarma therapies for constipation, certain herbs are also used in the treatment, such as triphala, Isabgol, Aloe Vera, and Senna. All the herbs used in our treatments are carefully administered.
