Understanding Sinusitis
In simple terms, sinus happens because of hollow cavities in the brain that are connected to the nasal passages. These cavities, known as sinuses, are walled with a layer that produces mucus to trap and eliminate dust, pollutants, and microorganisms. When this layer becomes inflamed or infected, it leads to the condition of sinusitis, commonly known as sinus. In Ayurveda, sinus is seen as a disorder that is caused due to the imbalance in the kapha dosha, which is related to the function of mucus production, fluid retention, and the body’s lubrication systems. Ayurveda therapies for sinus allergies focus on balancing the doshas.
Causes of Sinusitis in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, the causes of sinus are often linked to lifestyle and dietary factors that disturb the dosha balance. Some common causes include:
- Weather conditions
Regular exposure to damp and cold weather can aggravate the kapha dosha, which increases the chances of sinus allergies.
- Diet
Excessive consumption of cold, heavy, and oily foods can aggravate the kapha dosha. This is one of the causes of developing sinus allergies.
- Lifestyle patterns
Lack of exercise, irregular sleep patterns, and exposure to environmental pollutants can disturb all three doshas namely, kapha, vata, and pitta, leading to sinus issues.
In addition to the above-mentioned causes of sinusitis, this condition can also be triggered by a weak immune system, chronic stress, overuse of medications, exposure to pollen, and dehydration.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
Some common symptoms of sinusitis include:
- Facial pain or pressure on the forehead, around the eyes, and cheeks.
- Thick and discoloured nasal discharge and congestion.
- Noticeable reduction in the sense of smell and taste.
- Headache, especially in the morning.
- Coughing that often worsens in the night.
- Fever and fatigue.
How Ayurveda Helps with Sinus Allergies
Before we discuss the best sinus ayurvedic treatment, let’s understand how ayurvedic treatments can help with this condition. As we all know, ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healing. It addresses the root cause of the sinusitis condition rather than just focusing on calming the symptoms.
Ayurvedic treatments for sinus focus on balancing the doshas, which help clear the nasal passages and boost immunity. These treatments include specialised panchakarma therapies and herbal remedies.
At Dr Janugade’s Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatment Center, we follow a systematic process for all ayurvedic treatments. Our highly trained and experienced staff is dedicated to understanding each patient’s unique needs and condition. We take time to thoroughly assess your condition and then provide you with a customised and effective ayurvedic treatment plan.
Panchakarma Treatment For Sinus
Panchakarma is a specialised therapy in ayurveda, that involves several detoxification methods for treating different conditions and illnesses. The Panchakarma treatment is highly effective in the treatment of sinus allergies. This treatment process involves a series of five therapies that are designed to cleanse the body of toxins and restore the balance of doshas. Key panchakarma therapies for sinusitis include:
- Nasya
This is one of the primary panchakarma therapies used to treat sinus. In the nasya procedure, herbal oils or powders are administered through the nasal passage to clear mucus and toxins from the sinuses. Nasya helps relieve congestion in the nasal passage, reduce inflammation, and improve breathing.
- Swedana
This herbal steam therapy involves the use of medicinal herbs. The patient is exposed to steam infused with medicinal herbs. The steam helps one get rid of congestion and remove toxins. Patients suffering from headache due to sinusitis can also benefit from this procedure.
- Shirodhara
In this panchakarma therapy, a stream of warm herbal oils is poured on the forehead, which helps relieve the symptoms of sinus and relaxes the mind. Moreover, the continuous pouring of warm oils also helps with inflammation and nasal congestion.
- Dhoomapana
This lesser-known panchakarma therapy is also used for treating sinus allergies. The therapy involves the inhalation of smoke from burning medicinal herbs. When the patient inhales the smoke through the nostrils, it helps dry up the excess mucus and clears the sinuses.
Shaman Chikitsa
In addition to the panchakarma therapies, we also use several ayurvedic herbs in the treatment process. Here are some herbs we use for the ayurvedic treatment of sinus:
- Tulsi
Tulsi has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which makes it highly effective in clearing nasal passages. It also boosts the immune system, thereby protecting against sinus allergies.
- Haridra
Turmeric, or haridra, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce swelling and pain associated with sinus. It also prevents the reoccurrence of sinus allergies.
- Ginger
Ginger is highly effective in treating sinus cavities and reducing inflammation. Its warming properties can clear excess mucus and improve overall respiratory function.
- Cinnamon
The antibacterial property of cinnamon helps in combating infections that can lead to sinus. This herb also helps with reducing nasal congestion and improving overall respiratory health.
