Understanding Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to hair loss. In this condition, sudden hair loss occurs in small round or oval patches. Alopecia areata can affect individuals of all ages and genders.
This patchy hair loss condition can be severe in some cases where the hair does not regrow. However, in some individuals, hair does grow back gradually.
Key Signs and Symptoms of Alopecia Areata
There are some evident signs and symptoms of alopecia areata, such as:
- Patchy hair loss
The most evident sign of alopecia areata is patchy hair loss. The sudden appearance of round or oval bald patches on the scalp is alopecia areata. These patches develop over a short period of time.
- Exclamation mark hairs
At the edges of the bald patches, you may notice short and broken hairs that resemble exclamation marks.
- Changes in the nails
In this condition, the nails also show certain signs, such as pits, white spots, lines, and roughness.
- Itching or burning sensation
The affected areas may sometimes feel itchy or have a slight burning sensation before the hair loss occurs.

Our Panchakarma therapy for alopecia areata is designed to suit your unique needs and health conditions. We follow a personalised approach for all our patients so that they get the desired results. Our ayurvedic cure for alopecia areata focuses on targeting the doshas in the body, namely, Kapha, Pitta, and Vata.
Causes of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a complex condition with multiple causes and contributing factors. Some common causes of this condition are:
- Autoimmune response
This is the primary cause of alopecia areata, wherein the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles. This leads to inflammation and hair loss.
- Genetics
Individuals with a family history of autoimmune diseases are at a higher risk of developing this condition.
- Stress
Psychological stress is known to aggravate the autoimmune conditions, including alopecia areata. High levels of stress can make you more vulnerable to this condition.
- Hormonal imbalance
Hormonal fluctuations, especially those related to thyroid and endocrine issues, can contribute to alopecia areata.
Other conditions that can aggravate alopecia areata are nutritional deficiencies, microbial infections, and environmental triggers. At our Ayurvedic Panchakarma Centre, we first conduct a complete analysis of your condition, detect its root cause, and then recommend a treatment plan. This helps us address the underlying issues effectively.
Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatment for Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata can be effectively managed and treated through Panchakarma therapy. Panchakarma treatment therapy is a set of five ayurvedic treatments that aim to cure a condition by balancing the body’s doshas. The therapy goes beyond treating the condition at hand and also enhances one’s overall wellbeing.
- Vamana (emesis)
Vamana, which loosely translates to medicated vomiting, is one of the primary Panchakarma treatments. In this therapy, the patient goes through a detoxification process wherein, after the ingestion of certain ayurvedic herbs, vomiting is induced. Through this therapy, excess toxins and Pitta dosha trapped in the body are expelled, which helps with better nutrient absorption and an improved digestive system. Aggravated Pitta dosha is known to trigger inflammatory responses, leading to hair loss.
- Basti therapy (Medicated enema)
In this therapy, several herbal fluids and herbs are used to remove the toxins from the body. This procedure aims at detoxifying the colon, which helps reduce inflammation in the body. Basti therapy balances the Vata dosha in the body, which plays a significant role in determining one’s hair health. It helps in the elimination of trapped toxins and ensures better nutrition absorption.
- Shirodhara (Oil dripping therapy)
This is a slow therapy that involves the steady dripping of medicated ayurvedic oils at the centre of the patient’s forehead. This therapy helps calm the mind, relieve stress, and balance the nervous system. It balances the Vata and Pitta doshas in the head region, which promotes both scalp and hair health.
- Abhyanga (Therapeutic massage)
Abhyanga is a traditional oil massage that helps nourish the body, improves blood circulation, and promotes relaxation. In this therapy, ayurvedic warm oils are used for massage. The massage delivers essential nutrients to the hair follicles, reduces stress, and controls anxiety, which helps control the progression of autoimmune conditions.
At our Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy, we conduct all the therapies under strict supervision. These treatments are combined with lifestyle modifications so that you get the best results.
Shaman Chikitsa
The ayurvedic cure for alopecia areata also involves the use of ayurvedic herbs. These herbs are used after careful examination and checks so that there are minimum chances of side-effects. Here are some ayurvedic herbs that are used for the treatment of alopecia:
- Bhringraj
Bhringraj is known for its amazing properties to strengthen hair, prevent hair fall, and promote hair regrowth. It helps nourish the hair follicles and also prevents breakage.
- Amla
This ayurvedic herb is super helpful in improving scalp heath. Moreover, it also rejuvenates damaged hair and helps maintain overall hair health.
- Ashwagandha
This herb helps balance the hormones, which is essential for hair health. Additionally, it also strengthens the immune system, reducing the autoimmune responses that trigger the alopecia areata condition.
- Brahmi
Brahmi balances the Pitta and Vata doshas, soothing the scalp and reducing hair fall. It also helps reduce stress, which indirectly promotes hair growth.
